Augustiner by Celticon

We thought it would be nice to start the season off with another social event.
We’ll be returning to the Augustinerkeller Biergarten in Arnulfstrasse
on Sunday, 15th September from 2pm

ESME members, families and other interested parties are very welcome.
If the weather is bad, you may have to look in the Keller to find us.

If you would like even more details check out our Facebook event.

Hope to see you there!

Welcome to the very first edition of the ESME Newsletter.

So far, 2013 has been a very busy year for the Orchestra, Singers, and Big Band, and the rest of the year promises to be just as exciting.

Rehearsals started in the depths of winter but it wasn’t too long before the Spring Weekend Away. For this we returned to Bad Schussenried. As well as rehearsals there was plenty of time to socialize and get to know people a bit better.

Our spring concert in May, “Sounds from Underground”, gave both the Singers and several smaller ensembles the chance to perform.

In June, the Big Band played at the Lions Ball for the second year in a row and everyone had a great evening.

At the beginning of July, ESME members, family and friends met up in a Munich beer garden. The weather was perfect and it was a great opportunity for some people to model the brand new ESME T-shirts.

The final date in the diary for the season was the summer concert “Summer Reverie” in the Carl-Orff-Saal, Gasteig. As is customary, the Orchestra, Singers and Big Band presented a varied programme.

At the party after the concert there was time to say thank you and good luck to Heather Gentemann and Daniel Stratievsky.

The new season starts at the beginning of September and we are looking forward to rehearsing with two new conductors.
Andreas Partilla will be conducting the Orchestra while Andreas Sczygiol will be directing the Singers.

Our Winter Concert is on Sunday December 1st at the Münchner Künstlerhaus. Hope to see you there!

This year the ESME summer concert was once again at the Carl-Orff-Saal, Gasteig.

The Orchestra began the concert with Schubert’s Unfinished Symphony. The first half also included Grieg’s Piano Concerto with soloist Genevieve Holmes.

The Big Band opened the second half with a set inspired by The Blues Brothers and they were definitely dressed for the occasion.

The Singers then performed a varied set of mostly unaccompanied songs, including a rousing version of The Battle of Jericho. Dark Night of the Soul provided the opportunity for singers, string quartet and piano to show how well they blend.

The Orchestra and Singers also performed some pieces together and brought the concert to a close with a medley of popular songs from years gone by, including Imagine and The Locomotion.

We would like to thank everyone for coming along and supporting us. We really enjoyed the concert and hope you did too.

At the party after the concert we had a chance to say thank you to Heather Gentemann and Daniel Stratievsky.

Heather Spencer playing Viola

Heather first joined the Orchestra in 2009 and was instrumental in setting up ESME e.V. in 2011. Since then she has worked tirelessly to help make ESME what it is today. Heather also played the viola in the Orchestra and sang soprano in the Singers. We would like to wish her the very best as she and her husband move to the north of Germany to start their new jobs.

Daniel Stratievsky

Daniel Stratievsky started conducting the ESME Orchestra in September 2012 and since then there has been fun as well as hard work. We have learned a lot and are pleased to have introduced Daniel to the world of rock ‘n’ roll. We would like to wish him the very best of luck as he takes up his new position with the Theater für Niedersachesen in Hildesheim.

We will miss them both and hope to see them back in Munich very soon.

We had a great time at our Beergarden social last Saturday afternoon, and Sunday’s all-day rehearsal was just fantastic. We are so pumped up for our concert this Saturday, July 13! The Singers and Big Band heard Genevieve Holmes and the orchestra perform the Grieg Piano Concerto for the first time Sunday, and you are missing out if you don’t come hear it. Our country swing and boogie medleys didn’t move anyone to tears, but you should see our conductor Daniel dance — I hope our audience can tell from his back what a good time he’s having conducting all the rock and pop he never thought he’d be dealing with as a professional musician! And the Big Band fresh off their last ballroom gig rocks the second half with a Blues Brothers tribute. You do know the Blues Brothers, right? It’s 106 miles to Chicago… hit it!
